C1 – BLINDNESS – Chris Downey – “DESIGN WITH BLIND IN MIND” – TED talk

After the activity we did in class the other day about blindness, I coincidentally stumbled upon the following video. The TED talk is by a man who really did suddenly become blind. His optimistic outlook is wholly admirable.

ABOUT “CAPTCHas” and “DUOLINGO”

thanks4

Thanks to Fran, who has suggested this project called duolingo. Curiously enough, the talk he recommends explaining the project is on TED, the website I recommended before Christmas.

Did you know that when you type a captcha, you are helping to digitise a book?

See a guy called Luis von Ahn talking about massive on-line collaboration. He invented the captcha characters box, which allows websites to make sure you are a human being filling out a form to join a site or buy tickets on-line etc. Leading on from this, he explains how and why he devised Duolingo, which is an on-line collaboration site on which you acually help translate books and sites like Wikipedia while learning languages on-line for free. Watch the video to find out how.
