CHILDREN’S BOOKS VOCABULARY

Amazing what children can teach us, right?

Well, let’s just see what kind of vocabulary children start learning as we read them bedtime stories.

PART ONE

Your teacher will give you a short children’s book to read. Work in pairs (or groups of three) and read through the story.

You’ll be surprised – or rather amazed…. astonished… astounded…. flabbergasted…. indeed, gobsmacked by the amount of vocabulary an infant has ….

AND YOU DON’T!!!!!

PART TWO

  • Once you’ve read through the book, take a second look and make a list of any new vocabulary or grammar (particularly phrases with unusual word order) in a note on your smartphone.
  • Now copy and paste the list in the PADLET below. (This is so that all other groups can see your lists and learn from them.)

Made with Padlet

PART THREE

  • Use some of the vocabulary in sentences of your own.
  • Add them to another PADLET entry.
  • NOW WE WILL SEE SOME OF THEM AS A CLASS

PART FOUR

Here comes the hard part. I want you to read your book (or at least a part of it) out to the rest of the class. Make sure each member of your group takes part!

Imagine you are reading the story to a small child. Make it interesting, fun, enjoyable….

You will need to use a lot of intonation and voice modulation; stress the bits you think need more emphasis.

ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT

  • WRITE A SHORT ONLINE BOOK FOR CHILDREN USING THE VOCABULARY YOU HAVE LEARNT. YOU CAN WORK ALONE OR IN YOUR PAIRS/GROUPS OF THREE.

THESE ARE SOME WEBSITES FOR ONLINE STORYBOOKS YOU MIGHT LIKE TO TRY OUT:

…OR A WEBSITE OF YOUR OWN CHOICE

  • SEND THE LINK TO YOUR BOOK IN A COMMENT (see top of post in the “leave a comment” section) TO SHARE WITH THE CLASS

IDEA – WHY NOT TRY READING IT ALOUD AND RECORDING YOUR VOICE. IF YOU DO IT ON “VOCAROO” YOU CAN ALSO SEND ME THE LINK TO YOUR READING.

THIS LINK WILL TAKE YOU TO A FULL LIST OF ALL THE VOCABULARY LISTS I HAVE MADE, BASED ON THE STORIES YOU HAVE ALL WORKED ON

THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXAMPLE MADE WITH “STORYJUMPER”. IT WAS A BOOK I WROTE JOINTLY WITH MY DAUGHTER WHEN SHE WAS QUITE LITTLE TO TEACH HER VOCABULARY.
